Six Months Later Bitcoin Cash Support Continues to Grow
Over the past few weeks, there’s a lot going on within the bitcoin cash (BCH) ecosystem. Just recently businesses and service providers have been working towards changing their infrastructure to the new BCH address format. Additionally, the bitcoin cash environment got more support from organizations like the Bitclub Network and the merchant Kimchi Socks.
The Bitcoin Cash Ecosystem Shows Enormous Growth In Just Six Months
The bitcoin cash blockchain is trucking along after close to six months since it forked from the bitcoin core blockchain. At the moment, the BCH markets are holding strong after most cryptocurrencies fell in value alongside bitcoin core markets. Currently, the price per BCH is around $2,750 and global markets are trading roughly $1.1Bn worth of 24-hour volume. Bitcoin cash has the sixth highest trade volume today, and the most traded currency with BCH is bitcoin core (BTC) by 53 percent. This metric is followed by the USD which commands 14 percent of the global volume. The BCH chain is operating at 15 percent of the core chain’s difficulty and is 0.1 percent more profitable to mine. The median transaction fee for a typical 226-byte transaction is still only $0.02 for the miner’s fee.
Colored Coins and Colorful Socks
This week bitcoin cash supporters got some good news as a few more organizations have decided to support the BCH roadmap. For instance, earlier this week a team of developers announced they were creating a counterparty platform dedicated solely to the BCH chain. This means that in the future users could create ‘assets or colored coins’ that are backed by the security of the bitcoin cash blockchain.
Another announcement made this week was revealed the Kimchi Socks company as the business announced it would be accepting bitcoin cash for purchases. Not only will the sock company be accepting BCH for goods the firm plans to have a bitcoin cash sock pre-sale. Kimchi Socks states to its fans on Twitter:
Bitcoin Cash is now a payment option on Kimchi Socks — Soon the Bitcoin Cash Socks pre-sale will be up for orders.
Kimchi socks has started the BCH socks sale and pre-orders for socks are 50 percent off until January 31. The company details that only 1500 garments will be available for the pre-sale.
The Bitclub Network Switches to Bitcoin Cash Because the Bitcoin Core Network “Has Been a Huge Burden to Deal With”
Another announcement made this week concerning the BCH economy was made by the mining pool outfit the Bitclub Network. The pool explains that the bitcoin core blockchain has become a “huge burden to deal with” these days. According to the company, the chain has been extremely slow and expensive which is costing the business and its club members “tens of thousands of dollars each day in transaction fees.”
“Since the start of the year the average cost for a new member paying their $99 USD sign up has been around $17 in fees — We have seen times with $25+ and even some as high as $40 just to send Bitcoin for an invoice,” explains the Bitclub Network.
We will continue to mine bitcoin and pay all mining earnings in bitcoin — However, we will no longer be accepting bitcoin for payments and all commissions will also be paid in bitcoin cash as well.
Bitclub will change its business model to BCH on February 1st the company explains. This means members will have to purchase BCH from an exchange to sign up for Bitclub’s pool contracts. At some point, the company could move back to the core network if developers happened to come up with a scaling solution, but for now Bitclub will maintain operations using bitcoin cash because it is considerably cheaper for everyone involved.
“It’s our hope that a scaling solution happens on the Bitcoin network sometime this year, and if it does then we may consider moving back, but right now the Bitcoin blockchain is simply unusable for our business needs and we are excited to make this move over to Bitcoin Cash because its fast, cheap, and very liquid,” the company emphasizes.
Overall the past six months have been good for bitcoin cash and its supporters. Since the beginning of August the currency has climbed in value exponentially. In addition, development has been happening regularly between the last successful hard fork and the recent address serialization change. Many wallet providers have been updating to the new address format and a lot more will convert on January 14. Further, BCH proponents have witnessed the flurry of support from large businesses like Coinbase, Blockchain.info, Bitpay, Bitstamp, and many others over the past few months.

Singapore to Extend Regulatory Mandate Regarding Cryptocurrencies
The Deputy Prime Minister of Singapore has sought to clarify the nation’s stance on cryptocurrencies with regards to its money laundering laws. Speaking earlier this week, Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam emphasized that Singapore’s financial regulator will not distinguish between cryptocurrencies and fiat currencies.
Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister Updates Stance on Cryptocurrencies
With Singapore increasingly being seen as a potential destination for cryptocurrency, companies seeking to flee the regulatory uncertainty presently associated with China, Singaporean officials are facing increased scrutiny regarding the nation’s juridical apparatus pertaining to cryptocurrencies.
Earlier this week, Singapore’s deputy prime minister and Chairman of the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS), Mr. Tharman Shanmugaratnam, sought to clarify Singapore’s anti-money laundering (AML) and countering the financing of terrorism laws (CFT) with regards to cryptocurrency. “When it comes to money laundering or terrorism financing, Singapore’s laws do not make any distinction between transactions effected using fiat currency, virtual currency or other novel ways of transmitting value.”
Mr. Shanmugaratnam emphasized that the MAS, Singapore’s financial regulator and central bank, will not distinguish between transactions conducted in fiat and cryptocurrency in seeking to enforce its AML/CTF laws, adding that all financial institutions will be subject to the same regulations. The MAS chairman also stated that The Commercial Affairs Department will be empowered to investigate and prosecute cases relating to money laundering or terrorist financing.
Unique Challenges Posed by Virtual Currencies
The MAS chairman, however, recognized that the regulation of virtual currency transactions may pose challenges not associated with monitoring fiat currency circulations.
Mr. Shanmugaratnam emphasized the pseudo-anonymous qualities of cryptocurrency, adding that the absence of a centralized clearing further complicates the challenge of regulating transactions executed using virtual currencies.
In order to mitigate said challenges, the MAS will seek to impose anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing requirements on intermediaries that exchange fiat for virtual currencies – such as exchanges and brokers. Singapore’s financial regulator is presently conducting public consultation relating to the proposed Payment Services Bill intended to empower MAS to have greater jurisdiction over cryptocurrency exchanges and brokerages.
Mr. Shanmugaratnam’s comments comprise an apparent change in the position of the MAS with regards to the cryptocurrencies, as the MAS chairman has previously stated that the MAS will not seek to regulate virtual currencies, except for when the activities relating to cryptocurrencies directly fall under the juridical purview of the MAS. By contrast, Mr. Shanmugaratnam’s recent statement illustrates that the MAS is seeking to expand its regulatory mandate to greater monitor businesses that convert fiat into cryptocurrencies.

SEC suspends trading of red-hot bitcoin stock Overstock CEO: Bitcoin a 'form of sound money'
Is bitcoin a bubble? Maybe. Maybe not. Only time will tell. But there are some small publicly traded companies trying to ride the wave of cryptocurrency and blockchain mania that look pretty sketchy. Call them the bitcons if you will.
The Securities and Exchange Commission suspended trading Tuesday of The Crypto Company until January 3, citing "concerns regarding the accuracy and adequacy of information" about compensation paid to promote the firm and plans for insider sales.
The Crytpo Company describes itself as a business that "offers a portfolio of digital assets, technologies, and consulting services to the blockchain and cryptocurrency markets" with plans for a "rollout of a full scale, high frequency cryptocurrency trading floor."
Shares of The Crypto Company (CRCW) have surged nearly 160% in the past five days, more than 1,800% in the past month and 17,000% in the past three months, as investors and traders have bid up the price of bitcoin (XBT) higher and higher.
That stunning rise has lifted the company's market value to more than $11 billion. To put that in perspective, that's higher than the market value of well-known brand name companies like Macy's (M), The New York Times (NYT) and Under Armour (UAA).
The SEC move comes shortly after The Crypto Company announced plans to split its stock 10-1 to try and push the price lower and make it more affordable for average investors.
Shares had surged to a price of $575 before the SEC suspended trading. A 10-1 split would have increased the number of total shares by a factor of ten and lowered the price to $57.50. So the value of the company would not have changed.
The Crypto Company CEO Mike Poutre said in a release about the split that the company wanted to "see orderly market activity" for the stock and added that the split was "the responsible thing to do."
He noted that many blue chip companies, including MasterCard (MA) and Apple (AAPL), have done stock splits to keep their prices more accessible to mom and pop investors.
Poutre also referred to "the euphoria" surrounding bitcoin, and added that "we want people to pay attention to the business we are building, not the hype of a stock or the cryptocurrency world."
The Crypto Company was not immediately available for comment about the SEC action.
But the SEC has taken steps lately to crack down on potential frauds and scams surrounding bitcoin and other digital currencies, particularly with initial coin offerings or ICOs. With an ICO, a company sells a digital currency or token to investors instead of stock.
Several cryptocurrency executives are nervous about the industry getting a bad reputation too.
Brad Garlinghouse, CEO of Ripple, a company that developed the Ripple XRP cryptocurrency and also works to license blockchain technology with banks, says he wants to cooperate with agencies like the SEC to weed out bad actors.
"Many of the ICOs are more frauds than real businesses. The industry needs to work with regulators and not be in the shadows," he said. "ICOs are taking advantage of grey areas in securities law. What worries me the most is some of the hype in the system."
Jalak Jobanputra, partner with venture capital firm Future\Perfect Ventures and an investor in cryptocurrency tech firms, agrees. She said that there is "a lot of speculation" in the crypto area and that she "welcomes scrutiny from the SEC."
Still, there are signs that investors aren't listening to these warnings.
Another small financial tech company that just went public called LongFin (LFIN) has skyrocketed from a low of $4.69 a share in the past week to a high of $142.82 after it announced it was buying a blockchain microlending company named Ziddu.com
And then there's Riot Blockchain (RIOT), a company that up until recently was a biotech firm and has decided to get into the crypto business. Its stock is up more than 300% in the past month and 1,200% this year.
Mike O'Rourke, chief market strategist with JonesTrading, wrote in a report that this reminded him clearly of the dotcom and tech stock mania of the late 1990s. That did not end well for investors chasing the most speculative of stocks.
O'Rourke pointed out that one widely hyped business-to-business software company called Commerce One went public in 1999 at $21 a share and surged to around $1,000 by the end of the year. Commerce One filed for bankruptcy five years later.
Now this is not to say that bitcoin itself is a bubble. There is a real trend towards digital payments using blockchain technology.
After all, many of today's tech leaders, such as Amazon (AMZN), Apple and Microsoft (MSFT), survived the dotcom crash and are now doing better than ever. But investors need to be careful and not chase tiny companies trying to ride the wave.
The talk of a future where we're all using bitcoin instead of paper currencies may be a little far-fetched too.
"Digital currencies have a role to play with reducing customer friction and increasing transaction times," said Ripple's Garlinghouse, who was a former exec at AOL and Yahoo -- which are now both owned by Verizon (VZ).
"But government-backed fiat currencies aren't going away. Banks aren't going away. The dollar still works well and is efficient," Garlinghouse added.
